STEVEN UNIVERSE: REBECCA SUGAR'S DREAM TEAM
Recently, Rebecca Sugar, writer and storyboard artist for the well-known 'Adventure Time' series has created her own new show, 'Steven Universe.' It aired on November 4th, 2013, and is ongoing. Steven Universe is just what the dwindling Cartoon Network fan base needs, as the only other progressing series seem to be Adventure Time and Regular Show. However, Cartoon Network is still in high gear against their rivals down at Nickelodeon, so Steven Universe is 'quite a gem' (Ha,ha) to add to the prize shelf.
THE STORY:
The show follows Steven, a young, goofy boy who is apart of the Crystal Gems, a group of magical beings who protect the world from supernatural chaos. They are Amethyst, Garnet and Pearl, voiced by Michaela Dietz, Estelle, and Deedee Magno-Hall. Also more recently, one of the characters, Sugilite, was voiced by Nicki Minaj. Steven lives in the fictional town of Beach City with his father and the gems, as it seems his mother is deceased or missing in the series.
Raves, and Reconsider:
Raves: The theme of the show. Rebecca successfully combines a concoction of strong emotions and easy humor sprinkled with a beautiful set of nostalgic video-game style songs and art.
Reconsider: This show is surprisingly fresh and distinct, but you can slightly tell that the less canon episodes get wearisome of the similar storylines between the episodes of the progressing story. For example, the episodes 'Cat Fingers,' 'So Many Birthdays' and 'Frybo' are all very similar in terms of tenor. For example, Steven is somehow faced with a small problem which he looks at as an advantage, then things get out of hand, and everything is somehow resolved through the duration of a battle. In the first few episodes, this plot line is recycled, except with new antagonists/problems with each episode. I understand this is to fill the eleven minute time slot, but if the formula changed slightly with each new episode, this show can really grow into the future. The more canon episodes, however, really shine with Rebecca's ideas and the charm for the diverse cast of characters.
Last thoughts:
I really love Steven Universe. This is just what Cartoon Network needed to up their game and just what the animation-world needed to raise the bar higher.
